Parallel to its use in fiction, science adopted the term with respect to the numerous theoretical propositions to eventually colonize other planets by adapting their conditions for terrestrial life. Carl Sagan, astronomer and science communicator, proposed applying planetary engineering to Venus in an article published in the journal Science 1961 and entitled "The Planet Venus". Sagan envisioned planting Venus's atmosphere with algae, which would absorb carbon dioxide and reduce the greenhouse effect until the surface temperature dropped to comfortable levels. ⁸ Later discoveries about the conditions of Venus made this approach impossible. The study reflected that the planet has too much atmosphere to process and fix; and even if atmospheric algae could thrive in the arid and hostile environment of Venus's upper atmosphere, all the carbon that was fixed in organic form would be released as carbon dioxide as soon as it fell into the hot lower regions. ³
